The Department of Agriculture (DA) has ensured that no imported rice will enter the country this month.
Agriculture Undersecretary Ariel Cayanan said this month is considered the harvest season.
The influx of imported rice has been cited by farmers as the reason why the sale of rice in some provinces has dropped in price.
Based on the monitoring of the Samahang Industriya ng Agrikultura (Sinag), there is P14 per kilo of new rice harvest in Region 1, while it is P13.50 per kilo in Region 2 and P10.00 per kilo in Mindoro.
It is very low in production cost or spent by farmers on planting up to P15.50 per kilo.
According to the DA’s monitoring, the price of imported rice is P45 to P50 per kilo while local rice is P38-P40.
