Nearly 42 million Filipinos have registered with the modern Philippine Identification System (PhilSys) for National ID according to the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) Sec. Karl Chua.
Chua reported in President Duterte’s public briefing that as of September 3, a total of 41,970,083 have been registered for Step 1 or the collection of basic information from low income households and schedule appointments for Step 2.
A total of more than 28.6 million Filipinos have completed Step 2 registration where applicants must personally go to the registration centers and provide biometric information.
Currently, according to Chua, about 1.5 million Filipinos have received their National ID.
The government targets to issue National IDs to 50 to 70 million individuals by the end of the year.
According to Chua, the National ID can also be used to register for the COVID-19 vaccination and sign up bank accounts which is a big help to facilitate the transaction of cash aid distribution during this time of pandemic.
